Pennsylvania DEP home radon guidance

Pennsylvania DEP says testing is the only way to know your home's level, and that store kits cost about $20 to $30.

DEP says an easy-to-use home test kit can be purchased at hardware or home improvement stores for about $20 to $30. That is a store range, not a DEP sale price.

Buy a store kit, or hire a state-certified testing company. DEP also describes two limited free-kit paths below.

We did not find an Allegheny County kit counter on an official page during this check. Do not assume a free Pittsburgh pickup.

LimitedFree test kit

Pennsylvania DEP confirmation kit

DEP offers a free short-term confirmation kit if a screening result is greater than 100 pCi/L. This is not a general free kit.

Who it is for. All Pennsylvanians who have tested a home or other building and found a screening level greater than 100 pCi/L may request a free short-term confirmation kit.

Free

Free only for this confirmation case.

A separate note on the same page says parents of newborns may receive a hospital packet with a coupon for a free DEP kit. That path is for the newborn program, not for every household.

LimitedMail or online kit

Pennsylvania Lung Association and DEP radon kits

The American Lung Association and Pennsylvania DEP offer a limited free radon kit by mail for residents who have not yet tested.

Who it is for. The page says the kits are for Pennsylvania residents who have not yet tested their homes. The page title says radon target counties. The form asks for an address. One kit per family.

Free

Free. One kit per family. The page says the number of kits is limited.

Order on the Lung Association page. Allow two to four weeks for delivery. Postage to the lab is included, and the page says results are at no cost. Use it as a first screening test in the lowest lived-in area.

This is separate from the DEP confirmation kit, which is only for a screening result above 100 pCi/L. The order page does not name which counties are the target counties, so do not assume every address is accepted until the form says so.

EPA radon zone

EPA classifies Allegheny County as Zone 1, its highest radon-potential category. Individual homes can vary, so testing is still the only way to know your home's level. The zone is not a claim that your house is high.

How to test, and what a result means

Place the kit the way its instructions say, and keep the house closed when the kit requires that. A short test is a screen. It is not the last word if your state wants a follow-up test.

How we check programs

Test your home. Then help someone else test theirs.

A reusable monitor does not have to stay in one house. After you have a reading you trust for your own home, you can lend it to a parent, an adult child, a coworker, a neighbor, or a friend.

Here is an example, not a sale price. If a roughly $100 monitor is eventually used by five households, the equipment cost works out to about $20 per household. Your real price will be whatever the maker charges that day.

Lending a monitor this way does not meet a professional test or a real estate requirement. When you move the device, follow the manufacturer's instructions and start a new measurement.
